Osteoporosis

Services & Specialties

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle. One of the most effective ways to treat osteoporosis is through exercise. The right exercise program can help improve bone density, muscle strength, posture, and balance.

Your physical therapist will design a personalized exercise program that is effective and safe for patients with this bone disease.

Programs will include weight bearing exercises, resistance training, balance retraining and fall prevention strategies, which can ALL help reduce the risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.

You will be educated on fall prevention and given recommendations such as proper use of an assistive device or modifying the home environment. Postural strength and body mechanics play a critical role in spine health when living with osteoporosis and your physical therapist will teach you how to protect your spine.

We use the Meeks Method designed to prevent, stop or even reverse patterns of postural changes in the spine.  We focus on improving spinal alignment through strengthening the muscles along the back side of the body to support upright posture.

Physical therapy treatments are typically twice a week and may last approximately 6-8 weeks.
