Parkinson’s Disease

Services & Specialties

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive brain disorder that causes problems with movement.  Patients may experience tremors, muscle stiffness, slow/small movements and difficulty with balance and coordination that impacts mobility.

Although there is not a cure for the disease, physical therapy is an effective treatment option.  We use a research-based exercise protocol proven to improve balance and faster walking with BIGGER steps!

The BIG exercise program teaches people with PD to move their body more normally through a repetitive exercise series focused on amplitude of movement (BIG!) with high effort, repetitious activity that is performed one on one with your physical therapist.  You will be assigned daily homework exercises.  In this program we will address amplitude of movement, balance, and functional activities such as walking and getting up from a chair.

All treatments are customized by your LSVT BIG Certified Physical Therapist and can be tailored to meet your specific needs and goals regardless of the stage or severity of your condition. Treatments may be more effective in the early or middle stages of PD, but it’s never too late to start!

Fall prevention strategies such as home modifications, adaptive equipment and assistive device recommendations are made to improve your safety with mobility so you can increase your participation in everyday activities right away with increased confidence.

Your Personalized Mobile Physical Therapist will be here to encourage, support and motivate you to stay on track with your daily exercises that will help improve your quality of life. Parkinson’s Disease is a lifelong journey and once you complete your initial program, we will make a recommendation on a time frame for a physical therapy “tune up”.
